    College Basketball Random Chatter 2017-2018

Didn't see another general thread up but thought I would get it started with some fun scheduling news.

Ohio State and Cincinnati will open the 2018-2019 season at UC's renovated 5/3 arena, and then open the 2019-2020 season at Ohio State.

Been hoping Ohio State would play Cincinnati or Xavier so this is awesome. Holtmann said he wanted a more fun and challenging non-conference schedule so this is a great start.

Anything will be better than the never-ending series of games with Youngstown State, UNC Asheville and other minor league dreck. Playing more real teams can do nothing but help the team.

Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati and Dayton should do their own version of the Crossroads Classic in Indiana (IU, Butler, ND, Purdue).

Rotating opponent each year at a neutral site. 2 games, 1 afternoon with the states 4 best programs.

Sounds like a good idea, but likely will never happen. Not sure where they would play it? Cleveland? Nationwide? Those would be the only options, imo. And Cleveland would suck for fans of the southern schools, not so much OSU. And Nationwide would basically be an OSU home game.

Id alternate between Nationwide and maybe US Bank?? Not sure on condition of USBA.

Home crowd for OSU is probably gonna happen, but I bet you can keep it to about 50% (even if Nationwide each year). Indiana gets 50% in Bankers Life in Indy each year, but as the big dog in the state, the other 3 gang up fan wise. Similar to NCAA Tourney. Each school gets 25% of tickets, and resale takes it to 50% OSU, but that's fine. Fans get to see all 4 teams. It's really been awesome for the Indiana schools and I think it would be a great thing for Ohio schools as well.

US Bank is a shithole. I honestly don't know how/why it's still standing. I was there in June for a concert and was amazed at how gross it was.

I think if they just did it at Nationwide every year it would be a big success. I think UC, Dayton, and Xavier fans would all travel. All of them have been wanting to see their school play Ohio State for years, and if it's earlier during football season I don't think most Ohio State basketball fans are in full swing then. Would think it would stay around 25% each for the fanbases.

One other obstacle would be the Crosstown Shootout and what would happen to that the years UC and Xavier would play. Do they just go home-away-neutral and repeat that cycle then? Taking away the home matchups for them and dulling the matchup those years might not be very enticing, so maybe it could be UC and Xavier just switching who plays Ohio State and Dayton to protect their home-and-home rivalry games.

Either way, this is all a pipe dream and we should just hope Ohio State schedules Xavier as well in future seasons to keep these great matchups going.

This. That place sucks. I know they've been talking about huge renovation plans but I don't know where those currently stand.

Didn't think about the crosstown shootout. Indiana and Purdue don't play ever in Crossroads, ND and Butler basically just swap each year. But your scenario would work, imo, since it is still OOC. H/A/N...

So no penalties for North Carolina? I've only heard/read about the outrage they were able to get off with no penalties. But was the problem the university offered a bunch of easy classes that anyone could take? I remember when everyone was outraged that Andy Katzenmoyer took aids awareness and basket weaving in summer school to stay eligible. If it's a legit class that anyone can take, i don't really see the problem with it. Am i missing something?

There were a bunch of courses in the African American Studies Department that were advertised as lecture classes, but were actually more of an independent study. Class participants basically researched and wrote a 25-30 page paper and other than that, there was minimal course work for the class. Additionally, an administrative assistant did most of the grading of the papers for the professor, which is against university policy. The classes were available to the entire student body, not just athletes. They were basically your typical GPA boosting classes, but since they weren't taught in the manner they were supposed to be, and the professor wasn't actually doing the grading, they were deemed to be fraudulent. SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) investigated the matter and put the University of North Carolina on probation. Any further wrongdoing would lead to loss of accreditation and loss of state funding.

The NCAA was trying to punish North Carolina for this, but realized it wasn't part of their bylaws and was out of their jurisdiction. They then amended the Notice of Allegations twice in an effort to find a way to punish UNC, eventually citing that student-athletes received impermissible benefits because counselors were "steering" them to these courses, assisting them by e-mailing assignments to them while they were on road trips, and giving them priority scheduling due to their busy schedules. The problem is that that type of thing happens at every school in the country, and the NCAA couldn't prove that the athletics department itself did anything wrong. They also couldn't prove that the easy courses were created specifically to aid student athletes and keep them eligible.

Basically, the NCAA knew they had no case according to its bylaws, but attempted to punish UNC anyway. Finally, faced with the possibility that UNC would take the NCAA to court and win, the Committee on Infractions actually followed its bylaws and determined that the athletic department had not committed any violations. However, the NCAA spent several years, and millions of dollars to arrive at this decision, all while knowing that its bylaws had no grounds to punish UNC athletics. Typical NCAA.

2 rows in front us for Eric Church in June, had 5 seats that they had to come out and replace the actually seat. The ceiling had so much water damage, I was worried it was going to collapse. The concourse area barely had enough room for people standing in line at concessions and 2 people to walk through.

It's a shit hole and needs torn down or completely gutted and renovated.

Interesting. Either applaud them for their convictions or condemn them for not being more open minded and losing revenue.

Bridges should be a monster but Trier has to be number two.

State is loaded this year in what is a weird Big 10. Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue are your four ranked teams in the preseason? So strange saying that Northwestern is now a big game. I do think Wisconsin and Michigan are underrated
